PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Montfort Centre for Education, is a 30 acre educational campus consisting of two schools, a training college, four hostels, teacher’s quarters, vocational unit and a ParishChurch  to cater to the complete needs of children and youth from each and every background. The centre completed its 18th year and the Brothers of St. Gabriel’s founding father St. Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort achieved 300 years thereby celebrating tercentenary this year.

And yet another year came and went and we, the Montfort Centre for Education family are ever more enlightened and enlivened from serving and attending to one of the greatest vocation- Education. I must express my sincere gratitude to the  Sisters of Francis De Sales, teaching staff and most of all, the individuals who though often not seen around in the campus  but are keeping this centre functioning- the clerks, peons and house-keeping staff.  ‘Live to Inspire’, the centre’s newly adopted mottois our guiding maxim; we all with each coming momentstrive to serve, to achieve, , to enkindle and to inspire.We are also extremelygrateful to the MinistryofSocial Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) Govt. of India,ChristoffelBlinden Mission (CBM), Light for theWorld, National Institute for the Visually Handicapped (NIVH), Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for theHearing Handicapped (AYJNIHH), Govt. of Meghalaya,NorthEastern Hill University (NEHU) and  to all our  Well-wishes and friends for the guidance, supportand making this year a success.

CRE Seminar:

Montfort Centre in collaboration with Rehabilitation Council of India conducted a CRE program themed as ‘Psychological Evaluation of Children with Disability’ was organized from 12-16th  January. The 5-day program was conducted by Dr. Bro. Mathew Chulaparambil. Dr. Bro. Mathew (ex-principal Sampoorna Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore), a towering personality both in terms of expertise and practical experience of almost two decades delivered 5 days of stellar presentations, conducted ten psychological tests.

School Reopening:

Bright and cheerful, thousands of smiling and a few tense and nervous faces, MCE Tura welcomed all students to a new academic year on 3rd Febrary2015. The year 2015 was to see many achievements and events but before all of that could happen; the management and staff were to be involved in thorough planning of the academic plan for the year. The management also had to deal with a few replacements.  With a lot of excitement and hope, MCE Tura set about to start its yearly journey towards the hope of having being able to teach and lead good individuals to greatness. All through the year, the fervent and jovial mood was to remain constant for which we are, one and all, in reverence to the  Lordour guiding Star.

The Investiture ceremony, as is customary to MCE tradition, was held early in the year. Mrs. Aloka Guha, former chairperson of the National Trust graced the occasion to bestow the honor of holding school and house flags for the School Pupil Leader postions. The Montfort Higher Secondary School students are divided into four houses- Montfort House, Gabriel House, Francis House and Louis House. The leaders  displaying exemplary qualities both inside and outside classrooms were handpicked by a core group of teachers and officials who then for the entire year assist the teachers in various programs and also lead the students from their respective houses during the Annual Sports Meet and various other extra-curricular and academic events through out the year. 

Orientation on Inclusive Education:

Aloka Guha, former chairperson of the National Trust for the Welfare of Children with Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation, Multiple Disabilities and Autism; conducted a two day orientation seminar on Inclusion in Education and the existing scenario in Indian schools. She also announced of an upcoming Inclusive Education Workshop for the entire North East for which she requested couple of teachers from MCE to volunteer. Another seminar held by Bertha Dkhar, a Padma Bushan awardee and former principal of the Jyoti Sroat School for the Blind Shillong, in detail, explained about the Inclusive Education as a concept.

Annual Sports Day:

The Annual Sports and Games Day were conducted in the month of February with gusto as the spirit of friendly competitiveness reached new heights this year. The Chief Guest was Shri.S.P.Marak, Additional Superintend of Police, West Garo Hills.  The 400 meter race for the senior category was a nail-biter for both the girls and boys. Louis House and Montfort House students outshined others. Individual talents were also recognized in the Javelin Throw and Long Jump events. Various games were also conducted for Boys and Girls

Laptop Distribution for DSE Trainees:

Montfort Teacher Training College is extremely grateful to the Rehabilitation Council of India(R.C.I.) for their most generous efforts which led to the provision of 14 laptops to the 1st year candidates (SC/ST) of the Diploma in Special Education H.I. and V.I. for  2015-16 batch.

World Environment Day:

The World Environment day was celebrated on 5thJune meaningfully. The four houses of the Montfort Higher Secondary  and Special School came together to design all the school notice boards. The Boards were to be judged later on the basis of uniqueness and relativity. The Francis House was declared the winner. Some brilliant paintings and craft work by the deaf children were remarkable.

District Sports and Games:

The games conducted in the MCE Campus by officials from S.S.A. All participants were gifted a brand new T-shirt and snacks courtesy Ministry of Youth Affairs, Govt. of India. The sports events conducted at the MP Stadium, Dakopgre, were also a matter of great pride for both Montfort Higher Sec. School Tura and Montfort School Bolchugre

Indian Sign Language Workshop:

Montfort Centre conducted an Indian Sign Language program for teachers, govt. officials and interested individuals. With over 15 participants including officials from DIET Tura, St. Xavier’s School, St. Peter’s School Ph.D professionals amongst teachers from the Montfort Higher Sec. School.

Seminar for the Paretns of the CWDs:

Post Summer Vacations, when the parents of the CWDs came to drop their children, the teachers of the deaf along with the DSFS Sisters met with the parents at an intervention program. The parents were encouraged to share their qualms and anxieties about their children. The DSFS Sisters, some of whom are fluent in Garo, counseled the the parents on the various aspects of school and hostel life and what they knew about the children. The parents and children had a fun time bonding and learning some Sign Language basics and other related issues.

Teacher’s Day:

‘A teacher effects eternity’

The faculty and staff and MCE Tura came together on this very special day to be felicitated by their lovely students. Cards, bouquets and surprises were in store for most teachers as the children coordinated all the events, programme and a special lunch within campus

Montfort Talent Time:

Inspired and armed with their guitars and paint brushes, the students of the Montfort Centre  competed for honor and house points at the annual Inter-house competitions aptly named,‘Montfort Talent Time’ was organized from 16-18th September. Group and Solo Dance and Music performances were stunning as some children baffled the audience with professional looking hip-hop, break dance and fusion dances. It was indeed a very difficult job of the judges, the DSE Teacher Trainees, to adjudge the winners without being disheartened as all the students performed superbly

Plextalk Recorders– NIVH:

The National Institute for the Visually Handicapped, Dehradun; this year provided Plextalk Recorders cum Players for the high school  students who are Visually Impaired  in MCE Tura. The students were thrilled to receive a personal recorder and took no time to figure out how to operate it. The Teachers who are handling these children  had an orientation program about how to use the player for classroom and other educational and recreational purposes. We thank NIVH for their most generous contribution as this device will help the blind for a life time.

Orientation Program- NIHH:

An Orientation program on Concept, Management and Rehabilitation of Persons with Hearing Impairment was conducted by Montfort Centre for Education, Tura,AYJNIHH and CBM, Bangalore on 30th October 2015. Directro of MCE and Shri.R.Bhattacharyawere the person  who took the initiative to organize the programme. The lectures were conducted by Shri.PalashDutta, Professor (ASLP), Shri. Anupam Das (Vocational Counselor AYJNIHH ERC Kolkata ), Shri. P.Majumdar (Social Welfare Officer). The participants of the program were the Anganwadiworkers , ASHA workers, CDPOs,  Govt. Officials, NGOs, parents. Shri.PravinBakshi (IAS), Deputy Commissioner, once again enthralled the participants with a brilliant speech. He referred to Ira Singhal, the topper of the UPSC exams 2015 who herself is a wheel chair user. Mr. Bakshi stated that when God had made man in his own image who are we to judge, disabled or not, we all are equal he stressed.

St. Montfort’s Tercentary Celebrations:

  The celebration in memory and reverence of St. Louis Marie Grignionde Montfort on his 300th death anniversary was organized with lots of excitement and enthusiasm at the Montfort Centre for Education Tura. Besides the Montfortian Schools from Bolchugre, Jonglapara, Abhayapuri; St. Mary’s School Araimile, Stephen Memorial Dakopgre, Don Bosco High School and St. Xaviers were the other four participating schools.The event was graced by Rev. Andrew Marak, Bishop of Tura who was all smiles looking at the teeming crowd of the young hopeful children. Dressed in their costumes and armed with their guitars, the schools battled for glory in the events namely- Group Dance, Group Song, Elocution and Skit.

New Batch of DSE Trainees:

The year 2015 welcomed yet another batch of Diploma in Special Education (HI & VI) aspirants. The centre registered record number of candidates from Tripura and Mizoram along with candidates from Manipur and Megahalaya. This year we also received Sisters from the congregation of the St. Rosa Venerini. Principal of the Montfort Training College Bro. V.K. George and Director of the Centre Bro.K.J.Josewelcomed all the trainees and introduced them by way of a special assembly.The Trainees will spend the next two years, learning in depth about the various disabilities and how to educate children with disability. Various trainings are conducted to equip the Trainees with skills – Braille, Taylor Frame, Mobility and Orientation, Indian Sign Language, Remedial Teaching etc.The Trainees conducted regular individual teaching which were observed by the senior special school faculty.

Teacher Trainees’ Study tour:

The Teacher trainees were taken to Guwahati and Shillong to visit some of the special and inclusive education centre to get a firsthand experience on  the education of CWDs. Different centres have their own way of teaching and training the children. The trainees were allowed to interact with the staff and students to enhance their knowledge. They were asked to submit a project/report about their learning and experience. The trainees also visited some famous places in Guwahati and enjoyed the scenic  beauty of Shillong.

Braille Training for Mainstream Teachers:

The Montfort Management with the help and support of NIVH, Dehradun, this year facilitateda 9 months Braille, Abacus and Taylor Frame, Nemeth Code training program for the Mainstream school teachers. A total of nine teachers were trained by Mr.Adams Trico TingkoMomin, special educator who also is a lecturer for the Teacher Trainees (DSE V.I.) at the Montfort Training College. The teachers were quick in learning as they were motivated internally. Their passion for CWDs is commendable.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities:

December3,2015 celebrated world over as the International day ofPersons with Disabilites, was organized  at the MCE Campus with élan. Proclaimed in 1992 by the UN General Assembly and celebrated ever since, the theme for 2015 being ‘inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people with all disabilities.The young kids from the Gabriel School for Deaf then conducted an Indian Sign Language (ISL) activity, teaching ISL finger-spelling to the entire audience. The team of representatives from District Disability Rehabilitation Centre set up an assessment camp for persons with disabilities. The District Medical Health Office also set up a camp to display various aids for the orthopedically challenged, visually impaired and intellectually impaired individuals assembled for the function. At least 600 persons with disabilities and their parents were part of the huge audience. The program was highly informative as vital news was shared by the Employment Exchange about registration procedures. Mr. Sushil Das, Manager of Meghalaya Co-operative Apex Bank conveyed about the financial programs facilitated by the bank for persons with disabilities, urging them to reap the benefits of the low interest rates etc. The Chief Guest for the event Smt. S.B. Marak, who in person represented the honorable office of the Deputy Commissioner and also the SarvaShikshaAbhiyan delivered a short speech about the quality of being earnest, warm hearted and respectful to the disabled people living amongst us. The program ended with the National Anthem signed in Indian Sign Language by the entire audience. A buffet was organized for all courtesy Govt. of Meghalaya at the Montfort School Field. We are grateful tothe DSFS Sisters, DSE Teacher Trainees, SarvaShikshaAbhiyanJawans of Border Security Force (BSF) and all other officials and individuals who helped to make this event truly inclusive and successful.

Special Achievements: 

This year our students achieved many prizes and positions at district level competitions. The students of our school have time again proved their mettle especially in sports events. Miss. Sebelina Ch. Marak won two gold medals in the district and state level athletics meet. We got overall first position in the district level sports under Junior and Senior girls categories. Twice our school choir won first prize in inter school singing competitions at the Independence Day competition held at the MP Stadium and at the Children’s Day competition.

Leadership Seminar for Senior Students:

Every year the school organizes leadership cum personality development training programmes for the senior students of the school. This year it was organized in a phased manner. This would help the students to realize their potential and abilities lying inside the.
