On our visit to the Training Centre for Self-Employment of women, Dakopgre, West Garo Hills, we observed the weaving training being conducted by the weaving instructor Chenaring S Sangma. This program aims to provide women with practical skills to help them become self-reliant.

Yarn
During the visit, we saw the preparation of yarn as shown in the picture for sorting and tying yarns, preparing looms for weaving, weaving simple designs and patterns. The magenta yarn shown in the picture was one of the raw materials used in the training.

Chorka
Chorka (Spinning wheel) is used for spinning large quantities of yarn quickly. Operated by hand or foot, which rotates the wheel and twists cotton into yarn.
Chorki and Chorka are traditional tools used mostly in rural areas for spinning thread from cotton or wool before it is woven into fabric.

Chorki
It is a small spindle, spinning tool used for twisting cotton fibres into thread it is used by hand and it is used for making thin threads in small quantities.

Bobbin
Bobbin is a small cylindrical tool that is used in weaving. It holds threads or yarn and helps in smooth and continuous unwinding during weaving. A bobbin keeps thread neatly wound and prevents tangling.

Weaving Session
During the weaving session, our instructor explained about the Dakmanda, which is the traditional dress of Garo. The instructor told that the Dakmanda is a handwoven piece of cloth, usually two meters long and metre wide. Different colored threads and designs are used to make the Dakmanda attractive.

The weaving is done on a loin-loom (back strap loom), which is a traditional weaving tool of the Garo tribe. Different colored threads and designs are used to make the Dakmanda attractive. From the instructor’s explanation, we learned that weaving Dakmanda is not only a craft skill but also an important cultural tradition of the Garo community.

The weaving training successfully helped students gain hands-on experience. Using raw materials like the magenta yarn, participants learned not only craft of weaving but also its potential for self-emloyment. The weaving training was a valuable learning experience.
